Demographics of Great Yarmouth Borough

The borough has a population of approximately 99,700 (2021 Census), with a higher median age of 46 years compared to regional and national averages, reflecting an older population. It is predominantly White British (94.6%), with smaller ethnic minority communities contributing to the borough’s cultural mix. There are around 44,500 households, with population growth largely concentrated in urban areas. Understanding these demographics is vital for planning and delivering services that meet the needs of all residents.

Political Makeup of the Council

The council is under no overall control, operating a Leader and Cabinet decision-making system. The Cabinet is controlled by the Conservative group.

Great Yarmouth Borough Council is composed of 39 elected councillors representing 17 wards. The political structure allows for diverse representation and cross-party collaboration in decision-making. As of the most recent elections:

  • Conservative Party: Holds the majority, focusing on economic growth, public services, and community well-being.

  • Labour Party: Forms the main opposition, contributing to discussions on equality, housing, and social support.
